As a relatively new technique, endoscopic mucosal dissection (ESD) has its unique advantages and disadvantages compared with traditional endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR).
ESD tends to require longer operation times than EMR and may be associated with a higher rate of post-treatment adverse events. However, it is undeniable that ESD can achieve higher complete resection rate and lower recurrence rate than EMR. Considering the advantages of ESD technology in the treatment of lesions that are difficult to perform EMR, it can significantly reduce the recurrence rate, and the adverse events related to ESD can be avoided by more precise operation of the surgeon. Therefore, ESD is recommended for the treatment of lesions that are difficult to perform EMR.
It is worth noting that ESD technology requires operators to have certain operational experience and skills, and it requires high learning costs to master this technology.
